Transportation Driver/Personal Care Assistant                                                                                                      NC04

 

Reports to: Director of Exceptional Children and Transportation

 

Purpose: The Transportation Driver/Personal Care Assistant is responsible for providing safe, timely, and dependable transportation for an assigned student with special needs between the student’s residence and designated school location in Virginia, and returning the student home at the end of the school day. This position requires consistent attendance, safe driving practices, professionalism, confidentiality, and effective communication with parents/guardians and school/district personnel.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to meet district insurability requirements.
  • Successful completion of required background checks and drug screening, as applicable.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain any required district/state transportation certifications or training.
  • CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
  • Experience transporting children and/or students with special needs preferred.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Safely transport the assigned student from home to the designated school in Virginia, and from school back to the student’s home each school day, as scheduled.
  • Arrive at pickup and drop-off locations on time and maintain a consistent transportation routine.
  • Operate the assigned district vehicle in accordance with all local, state, and district transportation laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Report any vehicle concerns promptly.
  • Ensure the student enters and exits the vehicle safely and is delivered to the appropriate parent/guardian or authorized school personnel.
  • Maintain appropriate student supervision during transport at all times.
  • Follow all student-specific transportation plans, safety procedures, and accommodations as assigned by the district (including behavior, medical, or mobility-related supports, as applicable and trained).
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information in accordance with FERPA and district expectations.
  • Maintain a professional and supportive environment for clients during transport.
  • Assist clients in and out of the vehicle as needed, ensuring accessibility accommodations if necessary.
  • Communicate professionally with parents/guardians, school staff, and transportation supervisors regarding delays, schedule changes, concerns, or incidents.
  • Notify the Transportation Department immediately of accidents, breakdowns, emergencies, student concerns, or route disruptions.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly vehicle. 
  • Accurately complete required logs, mileage records, inspection forms, and other transportation documentation.
  • Participate in required training, meetings, and certifications related to student transportation and safety.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned by the Director of Exceptional Children and/or the Transportation Director.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of safe driving practices and defensive driving techniques.
  • Ability to work dependably with a high level of punctuality and consistency.
  • Ability to interact calmly, respectfully, and effectively with students, parents/guardians, and staff.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions, including student-specific transportation procedures.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
  • Ability to respond appropriately in emergency situations.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and reports.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit for extended periods while driving.
  • Ability to enter and exit the vehicle repeatedly.
  • Ability to assist student entry/exit as needed, consistent with training and job expectations.
  • Ability to lift, bend, reach, and perform routine vehicle safety checks.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions during pickup and drop-off.

Working Conditions

  • Daily travel between the student’s residence and school in Virginia.
  • Exposure to traffic, weather, and routine transportation hazards.
  • The work schedule is based on the student’s assigned school-day calendar and transportation needs.

Terms of Employment: 11 months; Only reports on student days. Does not report on Optional/Mandatory workdays of school in Virginia; does not report on Inclement Weather Days. If reporting on a delay or early release, only paid when the student is in attendance. 

 

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

 

Salary Grade: NC04 (starting at $19.62 per hour; training and experience may increase the hourly rate of pay)
