Computer Support Specialist Pre-Apprenticeship

 

 

NATURE OF WORK

 

An employee in this class performs tasks to aid in the ongoing support of teachers and students using computers in K-12 classrooms. Computer support specialists help people who have computer problems through phone, email, or in-person visits. Tasks also include troubleshooting problems such as logging on to computer systems or software, printing malfunctions, or routine error messages. In some cases, the employee will research appropriate manuals to find answers. They often work under network and computer systems administrators, who handle more complex tasks.

 

REQUIREMENTS

 

  • Minimum age 16 years old
  • Current Camden County Schools high school student
  • CIS 110 course completed
  • Physical requirement - lift 50 lbs
  • Pass background check
  • Review and Understand CCS School Board Policies

 

SALARY

 

Starting pay $11 per hour with incremental increase in salary up to $15 per hour.

 

 

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK

  • Train users to work with new computer hardware or software such as printers, word processing software, and email
  • Pay attention to users when they describe their computer problems
  • Refer major hardware or software problems or defective products to technicians for service
  • Set up or do minor repairs on computer equipment and related devices
  • Provide information for others in the organization about what gives users the most trouble and about users' other concerns
  • Walk users through the recommended problem-solving steps
  • Ask questions to properly diagnose the problem

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • General knowledge of computers.
  • General knowledge of related information technology devices.
  • General knowledge of software packages utilized.
  • Ability to communicate with users to determine the nature of problems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with users who may not be adept in clarifying problem situations.
  • Ability to train teachers in the use of hardware and software.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to independently solve most minor problems.
  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor
